Shumway Mansion

The Shumway Mansion adult family home represents one of the best scenarios for adaptive reuse of a building. Originally built as the Shumway Mansion in Houghton around 1900, the home was moved across Kirkland in 1985 to the Juanita neighborhood where it became a famous bed and breakfast. The lower floor ballroom was a great spot for wedding receptions. In 2011, the century-old mansion was renovated once again to become an adult family home. The vintage furnishings and styling combine with elderly care to create an elegant experience for which the Shumway Mansion has always been known.

Our role with the project involved reworking the floor plan to provide private living quarters for each of the residents. In
addition, we updated the building to meet barrier-free requirements as well as fire code and structural upgrades to address current code.

The great part of this remodel is how well the changes blend with the existing historic mansion while still meeting the needs of it’s new role as an adult family home.
